about_gem

GEM Hospital was initially started as Coimbatore Institute of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgery (CIGES) in the year 1991 by its founder Dr.C.Palanivelu. Over the next 10 years, the institute grew in stature to become the sought after destination for laparoscopic surgery and gastroenterology. Sensing the importance of providing comprehensive gastro care, Dr.Palanivelu established Asia’s first exclusive gastroenterology and advanced laparoscopic surgery centre named GEM Hospital in 2001. In fact, the name GEM Hospital was derived from Gastroenterology and Medical Centre and true to its name. The hospital provides world-class gastro care under one roof.

The initial bed strength at Coimbatore was 100 and in 2008, another block of 100 beds were added to cater to the ever-increasing demand. Various facilities were being added one after the other keeping pace with this rapidly expanding field. As a result of these concrete and concentrated efforts, GEM Hospital earned a worldwide reputation in no time and continued to march towards its quest for quality gastro care. Not a year passed off without a major milestone being added to this illustrious journey in the world of minimally invasive surgery.

Gem Hospital with its pioneering work has evolved to be the first and the only centre in India with subspecialties in Bariatric, Hepatobiliary, Colorectal, Upper GI, Gastrointestinal cancer surgery, Endogynaecology, Scarless Surgery, Liver Transplantation, etc. GEM Hospital is also the very first centre in India to get an ISO 9001:2008 Certificate in the field of gastroenterology & Laparoscopic Surgery at Coimbatore. It also got NABH recognition for excellence in medical services.
